Do you prefer the ocean, the mountains or ... ?
May 30th 2009 20:14
The question is sometimes asked, are you an ocean or a mountain kind of person.
I have no trouble imagining myself living by the sea, waving hello to the morning and walking daily along a windswept foreshore. There are worse ways to ponder blog content.
My heart, however, always put me elsewhere. Faced with the choice, I preferred the mountains. In my mind's eye, I was surrounded by friendly fauna and towering flora and the sort of stillness which is deafening and not available by the sea.
But I always had a problem with this idyll too. There was something missing, and it was not until yesterday, while jogging on a wintry day, that a light went on and I finally understood what was wrong. I needed a third choice!
Next time someone asks me if I am an ocean or a mountains kind of person, I shall answer, "Neither, I am a forest kind of person."
I want my sun dappled. I want my breezes filtered through leaves. I want my paths permanently strewn with pine needles. I don't actually care whether it is near the coast or on a mountain side, I just want to live among trees.
So let me rephrase the old question: are you an ocean, a mountain or a forest kind of person?

I am fortunate enough to live in a place that is not too far from the water and I do regular walks around it. There is just something about being around water that lifts my spirits.
So I would have to go with water.

Wilson, welcome to my forest!
Nameless, our first Mountains voter. If you ever find that deserted island with all three, can I visit occasionally?

bout seven years ago I came down off my mountain and had a sea change. Seven years on and I can honestly say, that you can have it.
Absolutely (and I do as a matter of fact), but now I want my forest ON the mountainside and will soon be heading west again to do just that. On the memories of long winter walks through the mountain forests of the South East NSW. . sheer magic. Agreed.
So one scratch for mountain ... AND one for forest on mountainside.
I just love that picture too, quite magical. and there is something about this time of year that must remind the european within us all of those lush forests of olde.

Love the smell of the salty air and the sound of the rolling waves -minus the seagulls!- but also like going trail-walking.

Lara, As you stipulated an ocean on a hilltop, as opposed to a hilltop in an ocean, I think I have to put you down for mountain, despite your poetic efforts to have an each-way bet. And anyway, poor old mountain is lagging.

The International Committee for Deciding About These Things has agreed to grant your request for a new "Island" category, but the Mountain sub-committee has objected to moving your vote to it. "It's the only vote we have so far," they whined.
You can only have one vote, so if you want it transferred from mountain to island, you need to state that clearly.
Sorry to be a pedantic pain, but you know what it's like dealing with committees.
