Do you prefer the ocean, the mountains or ... ?

May 30th 2009 20:14
forest

The question is sometimes asked, are you an ocean or a mountain kind of person.

I have no trouble imagining myself living by the sea, waving hello to the morning and walking daily along a windswept foreshore. There are worse ways to ponder blog content.

My heart, however, always put me elsewhere. Faced with the choice, I preferred the mountains. In my mind's eye, I was surrounded by friendly fauna and towering flora and the sort of stillness which is deafening and not available by the sea.

But I always had a problem with this idyll too. There was something missing, and it was not until yesterday, while jogging on a wintry day, that a light went on and I finally understood what was wrong. I needed a third choice!

Next time someone asks me if I am an ocean or a mountains kind of person, I shall answer, "Neither, I am a forest kind of person."

I want my sun dappled. I want my breezes filtered through leaves. I want my paths permanently strewn with pine needles. I don't actually care whether it is near the coast or on a mountain side, I just want to live among trees.

So let me rephrase the old question: are you an ocean, a mountain or a forest kind of person?

Give me the ocean.
As long as it's virtually deserted.

I love the mountains. I love the forest and I love the sea. Out of them all I love being near to water, even if I don't live on the water.

I am fortunate enough to live in a place that is not too far from the water and I do regular walks around it. There is just something about being around water that lifts my spirits.

So I would have to go with water.

That's two for water. Of course, Janet, you're a Sydneysider. You'd be evicted, I suspect, if you said anything else.

Even a lot of Sydneysiders aren't as privileged as I am to live so close to water. Some are far from it. For that, I count myself lucky.

I enjoyed peaceful moment, Chris. I would say that forest is my top choice here, after mountain and sea! Believe it or not, I always imagined myself can become a "Tarzan" in the jungle/forest! Pretty crazy idea, isn't it? Lol

An excellent new category has been proposed by Morgan and accepted after due consideration by the International Committee for Deciding About These Things. The category of Concrete Jungle is duly added.

Wilson, welcome to my forest!

Nameless, our first Mountains voter. If you ever find that deserted island with all three, can I visit occasionally?

Poll progress:

Water: 2
Forest: 2
Mountains: 1
Concrete Jungle: 1

Hi Chris,

bout seven years ago I came down off my mountain and had a sea change. Seven years on and I can honestly say, that you can have it.

I want my sun dappled. I want my breezes filtered through leaves. I want my paths permanently strewn with pine needles. I don't actually care whether it is near the coast or on a mountain side, I just want to live among trees.

Absolutely (and I do as a matter of fact), but now I want my forest ON the mountainside and will soon be heading west again to do just that. On the memories of long winter walks through the mountain forests of the South East NSW. . sheer magic. Agreed.

So one scratch for mountain ... AND one for forest on mountainside.

I just love that picture too, quite magical. and there is something about this time of year that must remind the european within us all of those lush forests of olde.

Lilla ..

Yay! Another vote for forest! Forests take a clear lead over ocean and mountains, and I can see Morgan heading out to do some door knocking to drum up more voters for the lagging city jungle.

Lilla, I shall picture you walking happily through the dapples.

Ocean on a hilltop (with a forest nearby)
Love the smell of the salty air and the sound of the rolling waves -minus the seagulls!- but also like going trail-walking.

Anonymous, it's getting crowded in our forest

Lara, As you stipulated an ocean on a hilltop, as opposed to a hilltop in an ocean, I think I have to put you down for mountain, despite your poetic efforts to have an each-way bet. And anyway, poor old mountain is lagging.

Hi Nameless,

The International Committee for Deciding About These Things has agreed to grant your request for a new "Island" category, but the Mountain sub-committee has objected to moving your vote to it. "It's the only vote we have so far," they whined.

You can only have one vote, so if you want it transferred from mountain to island, you need to state that clearly.

Sorry to be a pedantic pain, but you know what it's like dealing with committees.

I would like it transferred from mountain to island. Oh yeah and by the way tell the mountain sub-committee to stop whining.
