Pension rise: Swan on song
January 4th 2009 23:43
The Australian Treasurer, Wayne Swan, has taken time out of his busy schedule to talk up an initiative to increase the age pension in 2009.
What is remarkable about this is that Mr Swan's electorate of Lilley, based in the suburbs of Brisbane, is one of only two Federal electorates to be getting younger. While the demographic trend pretty much everywhere else is a steady growth in the over-65 population, in Lilley it is going the other way.
This suggests Mr Swan's stand on increasing the age pension will earn him few brownie points from the voters at home. It suggests Mr Swan's stand on this issue is motivated by belief rather than political gain.
Careful Wayne, you'll might give pollies a good name.
