My team lost today. It was heartbreaking.
They had been doing so well. They had won four in a row and eight of the past 10. They had moved steadily up the rankings and were showing the fight to be around come finals time.
And then they go lose an ugly, scrappy game like today's. It was heartbreaking.
A friend, hearing my detailed description of desolation, interrupted with what I assume was an attempt at consolation. "Never mind," he said, "they can't win every game."
I was shocked. "Why can't they win every game?" I asked him.
He looked at me strangely. "You sports nuts never seem to grow up," he said.
Non-sports nuts never seem to understand. Sports fans don't grow up. It's not in the lexicon. To do so would spoil everything.
