The doctor arrived on horseback
January 14th 2009 21:27
They were born on New Year's Day 1908. The doctor arrived on horseback.
They are Betty Richards and Jenny Pelmore. They live a mile apart in Truro, Cornwall, and are believed to be the oldest twins in Britain. This year they celebrated their 101st birthday.
They attribute their longevity to being active.
In recent years the sisters have learned Spanish and taken up painting. Mrs Pelmore recently bought herself a new car, a Mitsubishi. "It's got lovely high seats, does nearly 85 miles to the gallon and is very comfortable. I'm very proud of it," she told the BBC. Last year they visited Budapest to celebrate their centenaries.
They like to celebrate their birthdays with a drink. They don't like champagne - they tried that at their 21st birthday party and were unimpressed. Mrs Pelmore likes a gin with plenty of tonic water. Mrs Richards prefers brandy and ginger.

Similarly, I bet they are both keeping each other alive.
PS Do you think they have the yearly driving tests once people turn 85 in the UK and the twin who bought the car recently is still bright and alert enought to pass it or do they escape the same scrutiny as our older folk?

I liked the car story too. I'm sure the UK has regulations governing older drivers, and it makes it all the more special that the sisters are still so functional.
